How to respond to product recommendation requests on Reddit

By ReplySignal · Updated

A recommendation request is an opportunity to help someone make a decision. Read what they need, identify the constraints, and offer an answer that stands on its own. A product mention should follow from the fit, not replace the answer.

1. Read the request and existing replies

Open the original thread. Identify what the author has already tried, which constraints matter, and whether the question has been answered. A post title alone can omit a budget limit, required integration, or a reason your product would not fit.

Check the current community rules before participating. A relevant recommendation request does not override a prohibition on self-promotion.

2. Answer the decision rather than listing features

Explain the criteria that matter for this particular question. If someone wants lighter analytics, help distinguish the reports they actually use from capabilities they can skip. Avoid giving a generic feature list unrelated to their workload.

If you do not have enough information to recommend a tool, ask a specific question or explain the tradeoff. A useful response can help the author narrow their options without including a product link.

3. Be explicit about your connection and limitations

If you built or work on a product you mention, say so. Explain which requirement it addresses and which requirements it does not. Do not invent independent experience, customer results, or performance claims.

Use links only when they add useful information and the rules permit them. Repeated promotional replies can be unwelcome even when the product is relevant.

4. Treat an AI draft as text to review

Compare any generated draft with the original post and your actual product capabilities. Remove unsupported claims, adjust the tone, and ensure affiliation is clear. Discard the draft if it cannot be made helpful.

ReplySignal separates post matching from optional draft generation. You can monitor without drafts; when you enable them, you provide product details. The tool prepares text for review and does not post it to Reddit.

  • Does the reply answer the author’s actual question?
  • Are all product claims accurate and relevant?
  • Is your connection to the product clear?
  • Does the reply follow community rules?
  • Would the answer still help without a promotional link?

5. Decide whether to publish and follow up

Publish only after your own review, from your own account. Be prepared to answer follow-up questions about the recommendation. If the thread no longer needs your answer, skipping it is a reasonable outcome.

Measure the quality of conversations, not the number of replies sent. Finding a relevant discussion and deciding not to promote can still teach you something about product fit and customer needs.
