How to find customers on Reddit
By ReplySignal · Updated
Start with the problem your product solves. People may ask for a recommendation, compare tools, or describe a recurring frustration without knowing your product exists. Your first job is to find those discussions and decide whether you can help.
1. Define the audience and the decision
Describe who has the problem and what they are trying to decide. “Anyone interested in ecommerce” is too broad to guide a useful review. “Small Shopify store owners deciding how to prevent recurring stockouts” gives you a concrete audience and need.
Write down adjacent situations that are outside your product’s scope. A consumer asking when a shoe will be back in stock is different from a merchant choosing inventory software.
2. Look where the audience asks for help
Search Reddit for phrases from the problem, then note which communities host relevant discussions. Read recent posts and the rules before choosing a subreddit. A large community can produce more noise than a smaller community with a clear professional audience.
Keep a short initial list you can review. If recent posts mostly contain promotions or unrelated questions, adding that community may increase work without improving the conversations you find.
3. Qualify each discussion from the original post
A match is a reason to investigate, not evidence that someone will buy. Read the title and body, then open the discussion to understand replies and context. A useful buying signal is a current problem or decision you can address.
- Is the author part of the audience you serve?
- Do they describe a specific problem or ask for a recommendation?
- Can your product address the need without stretching its capabilities?
- Is a useful answer still needed, and do the community rules allow your participation?
4. Answer the question and disclose your connection
Offer a practical answer even if the reader never visits your site. If you mention your own product, make the connection clear and explain the specific fit. Avoid dropping the same promotional response into multiple threads.
If promotional replies are prohibited, do not use a monitoring match as permission to promote. You can still learn from the problem. Do not turn a public discussion into an unsolicited contact campaign.
5. Monitor the situation and review the outcome
ReplySignal can monitor new posts in selected subreddits against a natural-language brief. It shows scored matches with their original sources; optional reply drafts require your review. It does not provide contact records, verify purchase intent, or publish replies for you.
Record whether the discussions you reviewed fit your brief and whether your participation helped. Refine the audience, problem, or community selection when the results are consistently off target. Treat relevance and useful conversations as progress; a raw count of matches is not a sales result.
