How to choose subreddits for your SaaS
By ReplySignal · Updated
The best starting community is one where your intended users already discuss a problem you can help with. Member count alone does not tell you whether the discussions are relevant or whether product recommendations are welcome.
1. Start with the user’s role and problem
List who uses your product, the work they do, and the problem that brings them to a discussion. For an inventory SaaS, merchants discussing replenishment may be more relevant than a general founder community.
Look for role-based, industry-based, and problem-based communities. A founder subreddit may be useful for pricing advice, while a merchant community may be useful for inventory operations. Choose based on the monitor’s purpose.
2. Inspect recent discussions
Read a manageable sample of recent posts instead of judging the community from its name. Look for questions from intended users, enough detail to understand the problem, and replies that help people make decisions.
Notice whether posts are mostly promotional, whether the same questions recur, and whether your audience is actually present. A community with high activity can still be a poor source for your particular need.
- Are relevant users posting in their own words?
- Do they ask about problems your product addresses?
- Are discussions substantive enough to evaluate?
- Would a new matching post give you a useful next action?
3. Read participation and promotion rules
Check the community rules, pinned posts, and any designated promotion threads. Rules can change, and what another commenter posted is not evidence that your own promotion will be allowed.
Separate monitoring from participating. A community may provide valuable product research while prohibiting self-promotion. Keep that distinction in your review rather than assuming every relevant post is a place to pitch.
4. Start with a shortlist you can evaluate
Choose an initial set small enough to review regularly. Keep the matching brief stable while assessing whether those communities produce useful discussions. Adding every loosely related subreddit makes it harder to understand the source of irrelevant results.
ReplySignal suggests subreddits from the monitoring description, and you review the selection before monitoring starts. Suggestions are a starting point. Remove communities that do not fit your audience or intended workflow.
5. Revisit the selection using actual posts
For each community, note whether matches reflect the problem you chose and whether you can usefully act on them. Keep sources that produce relevant discussions; reconsider sources dominated by unrelated or promotional content.
Do not infer full Reddit coverage from a good shortlist. ReplySignal’s monitoring workflow concerns new posts in selected communities. Community selection and a clear brief work together; neither removes the need to read original discussions.
